The Portrait of a Family School Student

Social & Emotional Learning at Coyote Willow

At Coyote Willow, social and emotional learning is woven into every part of the school day. Students practice empathy, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving through cooperative projects, workshops, and small groups. With families and teachers as partners, students grow their confidence, build strong relationships, and learn how to thrive in a diverse, caring community.

Self-Awareness

Students learn to understand their feelings, thoughts, and values—and how these shape their choices. Using Zone Strategies and Belonging Cues, they recognize their needs, strengthen connections with others, and set goals through Self-Assessment and Goal Projects. They practice a growth mindset and build confidence as independent learners.

Self-Management

Students learn to manage their emotions, thoughts, and actions so they can reach their goals. They practice stress management, stay organized with planning tools, take initiative, and show responsibility both independently and in groups.

Responsible Decision-Making

Students learn to make caring and responsible choices in how they act and interact with others. They practice thinking critically, weighing safety and consequences, and solving problems. By staying curious and open-minded, they build judgment skills, reflect on their impact, and contribute to the well-being of their community.

Relationship Skills

Students learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships with people from all backgrounds. They practice clear communication, active listening, teamwork, and constructive problem-solving. They also learn to resolve conflicts, show leadership, stand up for others, and collaborate to reach shared goals.

Social Awareness

Students learn to see and respect different perspectives and show empathy for others. They practice compassion, gratitude, and advocacy while recognizing and celebrating the strengths in themselves and those around them.
